Keira Knightley's Royal Role

Odds are if you're seeing Keira Knightley in a motion picture these years, you're probable to see her in a point costume.

On Sunday, Keira, co-star Ralph Fiennes and director Saul Dibb wheel spoke to reporters in Toronto about their new period movie, The Duchess, based on the life of 18th century aristocrat, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

So wherefore does Keira think period of time pieces are still so meaningful today?

"I be given to think emotionally we haven't changed very much even though society itself is so different," Keira says of doing films set in the past tense. "When you watch those films, you completely read what's departure on with those characters. I think it's actually quite easy for a modern consultation to understand."

Ralph, wHO plays Keira's husband the Duke of Devonshire, feels film is necessary to change our views on the mankind.

"For no reason I can easily define, it can get under the skin of everyone and it can affect you," he says. "I think it can change you. It potty make you ask questions. It can elevate and inspire you to become something."

Director Saul Dibb sees parallels betwixt the celebrity culture of the past and the way starsare pursued today.

"At the time, it was the blossoming of the British race," he says. "I think we live under the assumption that this has "Bang!" happened now. People have always been interested in other people. The cult of personality has been about forever."

As for Keira's performance as a British majestic, Saul says she did "brilliantly."

"She took a selfsame challenging part and put a muckle of mania and energy in it," he says. "It wasn't a surprise, but it's refreshing to find individual who's so young, passionate, clever and funny. She's a force of nature."

Isaac Hayes Remembered By Aretha Franklin, Bootsy Collins, Others -- Plus Some Classic Hayes Quotes From Our Vault!

It's fitting that a talent as outsized and legendary as soul giant Isaac Hayes would prompt similarly big tributes from some of his associate icons.

Hayes, 65, who died Sunday of yet-undetermined causes, is best known to younger audiences for his work as the voice of Chef on "South Park," just over the course of his 40-year career as a vocaliser, songwriter, manufacturer and player, Hayes left a substantial mark on the casimir Funk and soulfulness music of that era.

Before he sour into the chrome-domed, baritone-voiced icon associated with his Oscar-winning soundtrack to the blaxploitation click "Shaft," Hayes was persona of a songwriting duo with David Porter that cranked out career-defining hits for soul duo Sam & Dave, including their signature tunes "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'." Asked by MTV News to comment around his old friend on Monday (August 11), living member Sam Moore laughed and aforementioned, "Ah, you're talking about my bubba!"

Moore said it used to bother him that Hayes didn't appear to set about the proper respect he deserved for his work out as a writer and producer. "Not like the writers and producers at Motown or Quincy Jones but he was [on that level], in my judgement," Moore aforementioned. "He gave me my voice. He taught me, showed me and nurtured my part. He didn't teach me how to sing, he taught me how to be a better isaac Bashevis Singer. That was Isaac."

Once Hayes went on to suit a performer in his own right, Moore said he apprehensive that his old friend didn't translate what it took to command a stage. "He didn't make a choreographer, he didn't have a show," Moore recalled. But he needn't have upset. "Isaac would just get up there and sit down and become one with the song he was doing ... and you would bet out and [the women] would be hanging on every intelligence. It made me wish my voice was that deep!"

Bootsy Collins, the former P-Funk and James Brown bassist whose outfits were often even more outrageous than Hayes' told MTV News that Hayes' death was like "another pillar out of the building" removed in order to build a new structure he called the "air lane of love."

Collins said he'd spoken with Hayes just last workweek about a project the pair were working on for BET, and he was finding it hard to believe his friend was at peace. "I met Isaac Hayes when I was on the road with James Brown in the '70s," he recalled, "We played a few festivals together. In my later age, I got to know the homo behind the music. He was the first official black man to be known as a substantial rapper, [and he] had nothing only praise for his queens and women of the world."

Another legendary musician wHO praised Hayes' spirit and song was fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Aretha Franklin, world Health Organization said in a statement, "[Hayes was] so musically advanced and timeless in his compositions. He was loved and appreciated by so many. He was an long-suffering symbol of the struggle of the African-American homo and was a shiny example of soul at its best." R&B prima donna Patti LaBelle reminisced about the terminal time she saw Hayes, at a concert they both played in Washington, D.C. "Although he was under the weather, he was still performing," she said. "He was the man he had 'the show must go on' spirit. In his absence, he will be remembered through his great music. He will always be in our black Maria and souls."

A tribute also came in from the Reverend Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network and longtime civil-rights leader. "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Isaac Hayes, a true historic world music figure," aforementioned Sharpton aforementioned in a statement. "Isaac Hayes was the first African-American to win an Oscar for a music score simply never lost sight of his committal to his community and the betterment of humanity. He was more than an artist he was a trailblazer, he was an innovator." Sharpton was slated to dedicate his evening show on New York's KISS-FM register to Hayes, who was a dawn DJ at the station in the late 1990s.

Over the years, MTV News spoke with Hayes on a phone number of occasions, and each time the man with the legendarily deep and booming voice came off as a music fan first and foremost. Talking about the re-recording of his most famous sung for the 2000 "Shaft" remake, Hayes said somewhere "back in my history I did the correct thing," oral presentation of the success he had with the birdcall the beginning time around.

"I tried to be as real as I possibly could," he said. "And I keyed in on the character, Shaft, the character himself. That was through the suggestion of Gordon Parks, the original director. He said, 'You got to depict the personality of this guy. You got to stick with him.' "

And for a man wHO Sam Moore said had untouchable skills when it came to wooing the opposite sex, in 1998 Hayes complained that some of today's soul singers were laying it on way excessively thick in their musical come-ons.

"I recall the songs out on that point today, when the kids talk about romance, I think they're too conspicuous, they don't leave enough for the imagination," said Hayes. "I like to use metaphors that's right and shoot it tedious and easy and then build. ... It's kind of like foreplay. You don't want to get on that point too before long, else it's all over. It's wish eating confect, just gobbling it downward and then, 'I want some more,' and it's deceased. You get to savour it."

He then offered some advice that could make come straight from Chef, the character he soft on "South Park."

"When you're talking to a woman, you got to take it selfsame slowly and build," he said. "Anticipation. And by the time you experience to the payoff, it's all good."

Pete Doherty 'Cast As Jesus At The Crucifixion'

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has commissioned a new piece of artwork that depicts him as Jesus at the crucifixion.

Doherty posed in person for the sculpture, which is meant to depict his inconsistent relationship with the media.

According to the Sun newspaper, the cast will appear on stage at Doherty's solo show at the Royal Albert Hall on July 12th.

Speaking about the project, artist Nick Reynolds said: “I was quite pally with Michael Hutchence and Paula Yates and their love affair — like Pete and Kate's (Moss) — went a bit sour. The negative Press put a downward spiral on them.

“And when I saw the Press that Pete was getting, it made me think of them. I saw the same pattern. As if Pete was being crucified by the Press.”

A look at how the sculpture was made is expected to featured in a new book that looks at heroes and villains in the public eye.

Steve Carell jokes about on-screen kiss with The Rock in 'Get Smart'

LOS ANGELES - Steve Carell, who plays Maxwell Smart in the upcoming spy comedy "Get Smart," says he had a scent-sational time kissing co-star Dwayne Johnson, who most might recognize as "The Rock."

"The Rock has softer lips. I guess I could say that," said the 44-year-old actor. "He smells like strawberry shortcake. For me, that's why they call him The Rock. He rocks people's worlds."

Johnson countered that he doesn't smell or taste like strawberry shortcake - "strawberry shortcake with liver I think."

The 36-year-old wrestler-turned-actor said he was gung-ho about planting a kiss on Carell.

"It was just one of those things where I thought well, you know, 'What could be the most entertaining and funniest moment that we could think of that would still make sense and still kind of root in reality?' "

"We came up with a great kiss," said Johnson, who plays Agent 23. "I thought if Jake Gyllenhaal can do it, Will Smith can do it, then I can do it, too. I'm going to own it. I was like, 'Give me those lips right now. Right now.' "

Said Carell: "He is such a good guy. We just laughed that whole day. That was a total no-brainer in terms of that scene. There was never one moment of hesitation or awkwardness. He's game for anything, let me put it that way."

"Get Smart," also starring Anne Hathaway as Agent 99, is slated for release June 20.

Ashlee Simpson - Dating Ashlee Hasnt Changed Pete Wentz

Being involved in a high-profile relationship with singer Ashlee Simpson has not changed Pete Wentz, according to a touring partner of his.

Fall Out Boy bassist Wentz and Simpson were married in California at the weekend, putting paid to long-term media speculation that their nuptials were imminent.

But according to Gabe Saporta, the frontman of US alternative rock band Cobra Starship, Wentz's involvement in such a starry couple has not changed his personality.

Saporta, whose band have toured extensively with Wentz and Fall Out Boy, joked that "ever since [Wentz] started dating a celebrity, he's just been doing lines of coke with hookers".

Talking to inthenews.co.uk, he quickly explained that he was "kidding".

"He's totally the same dude," he continued. "She's a really nice girl and it's weird, I can't say that I was an Ashlee Simpson fan but I definitely know that kids in the emo scene have her record as a guilty pleasure."

"She was trying to be the more punk rock version of her sister so that's a good thing, I think."

Saporta, whose band shot to fame after their song Bring It (Snakes On A Plane) was included on the soundtrack for the Samuel L Jackson film, explained: "The only thing that changes is that he gets his picture taken a lot more than he used to.

"I don't think that she was more famous than him but it seems that once two people that are in the spotlight get together, they seem to become a power couple."

Bryan Adams unplugs for '11'

Canadian pop-rock star Bryan Adams [ tickets ] can't help but be inspired to write music, even after 30 years in the business. "It's just so much fun to find another idea and to find another song," Adams said during a recent press teleconference. "I 'can't explain to you how addictive that is."He said he misses it when he isn't writing music. But when he pens a new tune, it is extremely satisfying. "It's like, 'Wow.' It's great. It's so nice to have a piece of new music. It's the same buzz today as it was when I first started."Right now, he is buzzed about "11," his first release of original music in four years. In the last month, "11" debuted in the Top 10 of 11 international charts, including No. 1 in Canada, India and Switzerland; No. 2 in Austria, Denmark and Germany; No. 4 in Portugal; No. 6 in the United Kingdom and No. 8 in Holland. The album, set to hit US shelves on May 13, will be exclusively sold in Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores nationwide. "It was an absolute no-brainer," Adams said about the decision to work with Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. "[They said] 'We'd like to order some records,' and we thought, 'Great.' I know the Eagles have done it and it seemed like a good idea. The last time I drove down Sunset Strip, there wasn't even a record shop."So I thought, it's good plan and they seemed enthusiastic and 'we're all on a page here. I think iTunes is going to have it at some point, but I don't know."Adams is touring in support of "11" with a series of acoustic dates in May, during which he will play classic hits and debut new material. He'll return to the United States for plugged-in headlining shows and opening dates with Rod Stewart this summer. (See details below.) "I think for a lot of people that haven't heard me do [an acoustic tour] before, it will be intriguing, because to play a song like 'Cuts Like a Knife' on acoustic guitar is quite a different thing than hearing it with a full band," Adams said. "I believe that that will give some insight into the songwriting and it shows that some of the new songs blend in. It's like one solid body of work."He said all of his songs work well as acoustic numbers because, after all, they were all written on acoustic guitars. "11" is an acoustic-based project."Halfway through, I sort of switched gears and decided to make sort of an acoustic rock record," Adams said. "And, when I play the songs live, it has actually sort of led me into a path of this next tour, which is my first American acoustic tour. And I feel confident enough with these songs and with the songs in the past that the show is going to be quite interesting, sort of hearing these songs stripped down completely, just myself and a guitar."With 21 Top 10 hits under his belt, Adams is convinced that the songs from "11" will be as popular as hits like "Summer of '69," "Straight from the Heart" or "Cuts Like a Knife.""Time will put these songs on the map," Adams said. "What is interesting is, when I look back at 'Summer of '69' did quite well in America, but outside in the rest of the world it wasn't a popular song. But, nowadays, it's one of the biggest songs in my set, everywhere. It just shows you that, with time, eventually good songs will actually come to the top, whether the radio plays them or not."
